Following the traumatic events of October 7, 2023, which we commemorate in this talk, the
disheartening realities of the ensuing Israel-Hamas war and the upsurge in global antisemitism
dramatically expanded a broad array of communal needs in Israel, America, and other diaspora
communities. Sylvia Barack Fishman shares new information about the Jewish women who
stepped up to leadership roles in unprecedented numbers. She shows how and why Jewish
women leaders are making a profound difference in Jewish life today as lawyers, physicians,
journalists, organizational executives, political leaders, public activists and influencers, rabbis
and educators, musicians, writers, poets, and artists. Her research on these leaders and their
work—based on in-depth conversations and soon to be published as a book—analyzes the
reasons for and the impact of expanded Jewish women’s leadership now and in the future.
Sylvia Barack Fishman, Ph.D., is the Joseph and Esther Foster Professor of Judaic Studies,
Emerita, in the Near Eastern and Judaic Studies Dept. at Brandeis University, and was the
Founding Co-Director of the Hadassah Brandeis Institute. She is the author of eight books and
numerous articles and book chapters on contemporary Jewish life and culture, and received the
Marshall Sklare award from the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry. Prof.
Fishman served on the Jofa Board for many years and continues her active involvement.
