Benovitz, Moshe
"Deena R. Zimmerman A Lifetime Companion to the Laws of Jewish Family Life: Urim Publications, 2005; Eliashiv Knohl Man and Woman: Guidance for Newlyweds Hebrew 2nd Edition Shiluvim Institute 2005," Benovitz, Moshe. Nashim, 12, Fall, 2006, 309-329.

Synopsis: The author, a professor of Talmud, reviews and critiques these two guides to the laws of nidda. The guide by Deena Zimmerman is listed under the “Books” in this section. The reviewer’s conclusion is that “there is no question that both of these nidah guidebooks owe their existence to the new cadre of halakhically educated women in the Orthodox world. A halakhic handbook by an Orthodox woman is an important step in the right direction no matter what its content, and the very fact that a male Orthodox rabbi names his book Man and Woman, out of an avowed insistence that a couple is a unit composed of halakhic equals (Knohl, p. 19), is a beautiful thing. In terms of strides towards halakhic autonomy and respect for halakhic diversity, however, the greater achievement is ironically to be found in the work by the man informed by feminist values, rather than in the work authored by a paradigm of the new halakhic educational process. Perhaps it is inevitable in the Orthodox world that an ordained male rabbi feels more comfortable breaking ground on these issues than a woman, whose every step is being watched, and whose very involvement in this process may be no less groundbreaking in terms of her personal development than it is in terms of the outside world. At any rate, the bottom line is that there are now women halakhists who are better informed than ever before, and male halakhists who are more sensitive to gender issues than ever before, and halakhic works that reflect these phenomena.”
