Koren, Irit
"The Bride's Voice: Religious Women Challenge the Wedding Ritual," Koren, Irit. Nashim, 10, 2005, 29-52.

Synopsis: Irit Koren describes and discusses the ways in which a number of Orthodox women in Israel that she interviewed modified the traditional wedding ritual or reinterpreted it to address feminist concerns. Because these women wanted to marry with a Rabbinate-approved marriage, the room to maneuver was limited. Most of the women ultimately chose not to confront the core problem of the ritual as an act of acquisition. Their acts confronted the traditional ritual without displacing the male hegemony and social order that sustain it. The author declares: "As feminism
gains currency and more widespread acceptance in the culture, a more frontal confrontation with the essentially problematic nature of the woman’s acquisition by her husband may be required, if the traditional ceremony is to retain its social relevance."
