JOFA Un-Conference: Spotlight on Pioneers and Innovation

This un-conference will be a day of lectures, workshops, panels, text-based shiurim, and unstructured conversations shining a spotlight on ritual innovation and the diverse manifestations of the pioneering spirit in the Orthodox community. We will explore feminist reception, transmission, and transformation of Jewish rituals both private and public, individual and communal. We are currently accepting proposals for sessions. Please read below and submit your proposal online.

 

Call for Session Proposals
Deadline for Proposals: August 15, 2014

 

You are cordially invited to submit a session proposal for the JOFA Un-Conference. We especially encourage the submission of topics that lend themselves to interactive discussions and workshops. Potential session topics include, but are not limited to: 

  • “Firsts, seconds, and thirds:” Transforming ritual experiments into regular ritual practice

  • The role of spirituality in innovation

  • Ritual leadership roles or identities--e.g. Shochet, mashgiach, mohel, sofer

  • Traditional ritual garb--e.g. tallit, tefillin, tzitzit, kittel

  • Creativity in public ceremonies--e.g. simchat bat, wedding ceremony

  • Sharing traditionally gendered rituals in the home along non-traditional gender lines--e.g. men lighting candles, women leading zimmun

  • Building and cultivating communal, rabbinic, and halakhic support for innovators and innovation

  • Negotiating the politics of “authenticity” in ritual innovation

 

All session slots will be 1 hour. Your session should fit into one of the following formats:

  • Lecture: 40 minute lecture or multi-media presentation with 15 minutes reserved for Q and A

  • Panel: 2-3 presenters with a moderator speak for 40 minutes, with 15 minutes reserved for Q and A

  • Workshop: Interactive, hands-on experience for approximately 15-20 attendees

  • Text Based Shiur

*All presenters should be prepared to incorporate a participatory or improvised element to their presentations.
